Dear Right Moves,

My teacher, whose work I truly admire, is so critical of my work that she is breaking my spirit. She never has a positive word to say. All of her critiques are blistering. I can’t be as awful as she says I am, because I’m on a full scholarship to photography school.  How do I make this better?

Sylvia Trapped, St. Louis, Mo.

Dear Trapped,

As problems go, this is an important one. Your teacher is supposed to be your mentor and your inspiration. Correction and guidance are part of the teaching and learning experience, but the kind of criticism you are talking about is unacceptable.  Make an appointment to speak directly to the teacher about your experience with her. Ask openly and without emotion what the problem between you two might be. If your teacher tells you that, in her opinion, you are without talent, go to your advisor and transfer out of her class. IMMEDIATELY.  This is not about you. It’s about her.
