Web Site: At Least 11 Photographers Arrested at RNC Protests
Of the 800-some people swept up by police at Republican National Convention protests last week, at least 42 were journalists, including 11 photojournalists. This is according to a list compiled by the Minnesota Independent, a liberal publication that's part of the Center for Independent Media. On the list of arrests:
- Tom Aviles, WCCO photojournalist
- Ben Garvin, Pioneer Press photographer
- Ed Matthews, University of Kentucky photojournalism student
- Jonathan Malat, KARE-11 photojournalist
- Stephen Maturen, Minnesota Daily assistant picture editor
- Britney McIntosh, University of Kentucky photojournalism student
- Jason Nicholas, New York Post freelance photographer
- Mark Ovaska, Rochester freelance photographer
- Matt Rourke, Associated Press photographer
- Jeff Schorfheide, Madison, Wis. Badger-Herald photographer
- Jim Winn, University of Kentucky journalism adviser

There was also a freelance photographer arrested at the scene not mentioned in the story. Dan Thompson, a recent graduate of the photojournalism effort at Columbia College Chicago was arrested and detained for 36 hours.
Thompson was a staff shooter at the Columbia Chronicle during the Spring 2007 semester and now shoots freelance stories around the country.
