Bigger Graphics in Baltimore Sun Redesign

I grew up reading The Baltimore Sun and feel some connection to it, so I'm trying very hard to like the paper's redesign that debuted Sunday. At left is the Saturday Sun, at right is Sunday's:

Here's today's front page and today's sports page:

Newspapers, especially those in the Tribune chain like The Sun, are suddenly all about risky, graphic-intensive redesigns. The boldest of late has been the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which makes The Sun look downright conservative. For photographers, this increased emphasis on visuals is a rare bright spot in the newspaper business. So my review comes down in favor of the new design.

But redesigns are tough on readers, and this is the second serious redesign The Sun has tried in less than three years. As Tribune has cut staff and pages, there's a feeling in Baltimore that the newspaper isn't the important local institution it used to be. Starting this week The Sun says it has officially changed its name to The Baltimore Sun. Yeah, bad call. That's what people from outside Maryland call it.

For more, The Sun has a page about the redesign and a PDF guide.

Comments

I remember hearing Maggie Steber speak a few months ago on the redesign of the South Florida sun, the process and everything. I find it completely amazing that photographers are having a role in the design... the redesign is pretty nice here on the Sun, I like it.

It is refreshing, thats what it is.
