Wall Street Journal Discovers Photography

Wsj

Great Caesar's ghost! There are photos on the front of today's Wall Street Journal! Photos that aren't mug shots! Above the fold! Three columns wide! In lifelike color! What next, cats chasing dogs?

(For comparison, check out the Journal's front page following the Super Tuesday primary in February: PDF. No photos.)

Presumably, this has something to do with that other headline on the front page: Editor Out as Murdoch Speeds Change at WSJ.

Also: Newsday? You're next.

I totally disagree! I thought the WSJ was a beautiful and dignified publication in which the writing was so strong it didn't need to fall back on photography to peek interest. I loved the illustrated portraits (they were not mugshots) which gave the reporting a contemplative quality not to mention a break from visual clutter. The WSJ was designed for people who like to read, not look at catchy pictures. And, I say all of this as someone who works in the photo industry which I recognize is pretty ironic...I love photography. In any case, I was so sad about the design over-haul I actually cancelled my subscription, not out of spite (I'm not crazy) but out of loss of interest.
