Nikon Pulls D3 Firmware with Image Corruption Issues

Nikon has pulled its latest firmware update for the D3 after users complained about corruption issues in some of their images. According to a notice posted on Nikon's U.S. tech support site, Nikon confirmed that Firmware Ver. 1.10 for the D3 can corrupt images when the following settings are applied on the D3:

  • Release mode: Continuous high speed (CH), or Continuous low speed (CL) with Custom Setting d2 set to 9 fps
  • Image area: FX format (36x24) or 5:4 (30x24)
  • Image quality: NEF (RAW) or NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine/normal/basic
  • NEF (RAW) recording>NEF (RAW) bit depth: 14-bit

Since the firmware update earlier this week, photography message boards have been filled with posts about D3 users who downloaded the update and had been experiencing "ghosting" issues in some of their images. Yesterday, Rob Galbraith's DPI website also reported on the problem.
