Breaking News: Pulitzer Prizes Announced
The 2008 Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists were just announced. Here are the winners in the photography categories:
Breaking News Photography:
Adrees Latif of Reuters won "for his dramatic photograph of a Japanese videographer, sprawled on the pavement, fatally wounded during a street demonstration in Myanmar." (Pictured above; related PDNPulse post.)
Finalists were: "Mahmud Hams of Agence France-Presse for
his picture of a missile, caught in mid-air, as it falls on a target in
the Gaza Strip while young Palestinians scramble for safety, and the
Los Angeles Times Staff for its powerful and often unpredictable photos
that captured wildfires devastating California."
Feature Photography:
Preston Gannaway of the Concord (N.H.) Monitor won "for her intimate chronicle of a family coping with a parent’s terminal illness."
Finalists were: "David Guttenfelder of the Associated Press for his harrowing portfolio of Vietnamese children afflicted by the toxic legacy of Agent Orange, three decades after the Vietnam War ended, and Mona Reeder of The Dallas Morning News for her memorable pictures of disadvantaged Texans hidden amid the state's economic abundance."
Other categories:
The Washington Post won an extraordinary six Pulitzer Prizes this year. Among them was the coveted Public Service prize for reporting on the poor treatment of wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital. Photographer Michel du Cille was among the three journalists who worked on this story; reporters Dana Priest and Anne Hull also shared the award.
The Post staff also shared the breaking news reporting prize for coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings.
