NPPA Announces Still Photography Winners In 2008 Best Of Photojournalism Contest (NPPA)
Judges for the NPPA’s 2008 Best of Photojournalism contest have cast their votes for the still photography categories. Olivier Douliery of Abaca Press won first place in the News Portraits and Personality category for an image of the Dali Lama. The New York TimesSylwia Kapuscinski won the Art of Entertainment category, and Jon M. Fletcher of The Florida Times-Union finished first in the Conceptual Photographic Illustration category. The Associated Press’ Julie Jacobson received first place in the Sports Action category, and Tomasz Gudzowaty of Yours Gallery won the Sports Enterprise category. First place in the Sporting Field of Play went to Sports Illustrated’s Seamus Murphy for his image of quail fighting in Afghanistan. To see a complete list of winners, click here.

Toronto foresees itself becoming a shining star in the photography world in 2010. That’s when Ryerson University will open a new photography gallery showcasing 300,000 photographs from the Black Star Collection. Donated to the university by an anonymous donor several years ago, the archive includes images shot by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Andreas Feininger and Marion Post-Wolcott. The Toronto Star predicts that the as-yet-unnamed gallery “will instantly become Canada’s most important” photography museum, drawing large crowds.

Magazine Photog Archie Lieberman Dies (NPPA)
Archie Lieberman shot for Look magazine from 1952 to 1972. His work also appeared in other magazines such as Life, Time, Fortune and Collier's, as well as more than 20 books. Lieberman’s photos have been on display at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He died on March 12 at an Iowa care facility. Lieberman was 81.

What’s a magazine to do when it can’t advertise a product on its cover? Use glow-in-the-dark ink. That’s just what Vice has done with the latest issue of its Canadian edition, which advertises a BMW. “Maintaining the integrity of our cover—which is not usually for sale—while delivering a unique and rad brand message for BMW was an amazing challenge,” Vice director of sales and marketing Shawn Phelan told the Canadian marketing magazine Strategy. Vice doesn’t have plans “as yet” to try a similar stunt in its U.S. edition.
