Another Iraq Hazard: NYT Attack Dogs?

Kambers_2

More violence in Baghdad: Reuters reports that Blackwater security shot dead The New York Times's dog!

Never mind the war – We want all available information about this poor pooch. Over on The Huffington Post, Eason Jordan  advances the story with the following:

"Last month, a New York Times correspondent told me one of the bureau dogs bit an Iraqi in the crotch and attacked photojournalist Mike Kambers in the chest."

Such a claim demands to be checked out. Time to get Kambers on the phone! Except we've never heard of Mike Kambers. I can't find any references to him online. No hits for his name in the Times archive. Searches for obvious variations and misspellings return zilch. He's a Google ghost. A Kambers of secrets.

If you've heard of Mike Kambers, please drop me a line. Our search continues...

UPDATE: Jordan misspelled the name and we're feeling foolish for not knowing Michael Kamber. He's shot extensively for the Times and was nominated for a Pulitzer! Here's Kamber's web site.

UPDATE #2: We've heard from Mike Kamber! In an e-mail, he confirms he was bitten by a New York Times guard dog some time this spring, probably in April. He writes: "The dog got loose from it's cage and did not know me as I was new in country. (I'd worked there in '03 and '04 before this dog was around.) The dog lunged at me and bit me on the chest. There was some blood but I did not go to the hospital." A short time later, the dog was given away – so this was not the same dog that the Blackwater guard shot.
